Tabby - Brown - Sid - **courtesy Post** - Small - Adult - Male
Sid is one lucky little fellow so far...read his story and see if you may be able to help Sid's happy tail come true... One Sunday morning in late April George & Richard were leaving their house to go on a day trip. As they walked towards the car in the driveway they saw a cat laying behind the car soaking up some rays. Like any first reaction they made a noise to try and make him move so they could pull out of the driveway. But he did not budge! They made it louder and he finally moved, but as he got up and walked it was clear he had a fractured back leg as he walked towards the other side of the driveway hobbling on three legs. They looked at each other and the same thought ran through their minds without even saying a word. They said to each other, OK, we have to try and help him. If he lets us pick him up then we take him to the vet and see what we can do for his leg. If he doesnt, we can try to capture him and if that is unsuccessful we can at least feed him. George and Richard are animal lovers, having six cats of their own, all indoors and all rescues!! Richard went to pick him up and he didnt hiss, bat back, or anything like that. Sid let them pick him up without any issue and they put Sid in the car and proceeded to drive off to the animal hospital. While driving there, George was in the back seat with Sid and Sid was very well socialized, alert, and seemed very pleased to be with themeven though he was probably in great pain. They felt he was an indoor cat (based on his pleasant social demeanor) who was probably abandoned fairly recently. They discussed that they would do all they could for Sid physically to get Sid back to health and then hopefully try to find a forever home for Sid. X-ray results confirmed what George & Richard thought, Sid had a fractured leg. The emergency room vet gave Sid a pain shot. Sid was also checked for a chip but none was found. The next day George & Richard brought Sid to their vet of over 15 years. The vet's check showed Sid had no fleas, no ear mites, good teeth (about 7 years old), no respiratory ailments.just a painful leg fracture. They took blood to check for FIV/Feline leukemia and the results came back positive for FIV. Since FIV cats live long and healthy lives, this diagnosis made no difference to George & Richard but they knew it would be a difficult hurdle to overcome as FIV cats can be more difficult to adopt out. The vet gave Sid all his vaccinations and scheduled the surgery for the following Friday. The surgery required them to place a pin inside Sids leg to heal properly. He was also neutered during the process. He then required 6-8 weeks of healing, rehab and confinement so as not to further damage the repaired leg. After his surgery there were several follow up visits. The vet said that the leg was healing wonderfully and that they could move him from the basement (where Sid was being confined) and they could start the integration process. Using all the usual methods that they had used previously with the other six cats, they began with swapping out their beds, towels and toys during a slow and arduous process, and made a very comfortable setup for Sid in one bathroom which has decent space. Unfortunately, when they first brought Sid up, Sid caught a glimpse of one of the other cats and totally freaked out. It wasnt a normal hissing, growling type thing it was hysteria. It was evident that Sid must have had an incredibly traumatic experience while fending for himself outdoors. That being said they continued the isolation process. Their vet suggested a pheromone collar stating that they are usually very effective. George built a second door onto the bathroom doorframe with a screen so Sid could have some visible separation, in preparation for the integration try with the other cats. Two more weeks passed and they decided to attempt an introduction. They locked up five of the cats, and left only one out to explore the healing visitor through the screen door that had been built. As soon as they opened the bathroom door and Sid saw Miles, Sid freaked out yet again w
